da Vinci^® Gynecologic Surgery

For years, traditional open gynecologic surgery, which requires a large incision to access the uterus and surrounding anatomy, was the standard for many procedures. In 2008, St. Joseph's Health Hospital became one of the first hospitals in Central New York to utilize the da Vinci® Surgical System for sacrocolpopexy—a procedure to repair pelvic organ prolapse. This innovative approach significantly reduces incision size, recovery time, and patient discomfort. Since then, St. Joseph's has continued to lead in minimally invasive surgery, performing more than 300 hysterectomies annually, with 98% done using minimally invasive vaginal, laparoscopic, or robotic techniques.

Robotic-assisted surgery with the da Vinci® system may be the most effective and least invasive option for treating conditions such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, menorrhagia, uterine prolapse, urinary incontinence, and cervical or uterine cancer. The system allows surgeons to make tiny incisions, just 1-2 cm in size, offering greater precision and control, reducing pain and risk, and leading to faster recoveries and excellent clinical outcomes.
