Heart Disease

Should you talk with your doctor about heart disease?

Your body offers multiple signs and symptoms when your heart health is at risk. Although some of them might seem minor or scary, they shouldn’t be ignored — they could signal larger issues.

Know the risk factors and symptoms of heart disease.

MEDICAL RISK FACTORS:

Diabetes mellitus
High blood pressure
Unhealthy blood-cholesterol levels
Clotting disorder, or factor V Leiden (such as frequent clotting in the legs)
Obesity
Inflammatory disease (such as lupus; rheumatoid arthritis; Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis; or vasculitis)

BEHAVIORAL RISK FACTORS:

Tobacco use
A diet high in saturated fat, trans fat and/or cholesterol
Alcohol use (women more than one drink a day; men more than two drinks a day)
Cocaine or other illicit drug use

GENETIC RISK FACTORS:

Family history of sudden cardiac death
Family history of premature coronary artery disease

SYMPTOMS OF CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE:

Chest, arm, or back pain on exertion
Easily winded after a small amount of exertion
Unusual or profound perspiration
Chest pressure, squeezing, tightness, or heaviness
Fast or uneven heartbeat — feeling like you’ve had too much caffeine or you feel panicked
Dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain
Extreme fatigue
Swelling, especially in the legs, ankles, or feet
Leg cramps or difficulty walking
Weakness in your extremities

Symptoms

Always pay attention to your symptoms.

Do not ignore your chest discomfort. Call your primary-care physician for a heart-health screening. If you don’t have a primary-care physician, fill out the new-patient request form below, and our referral services will connect you with one. If you are concerned or experiencing chest pain, never hesitate to dial 911 or go to the Emergency Department of the nearest hospital. The Emergency Department is still the safest place to be if you are having a heart attack.
