St. Joseph’s Health Named One of America’s Best Hospitals in Four Service Areas by Women’s Choice Award

Syracuse, NY (January 9, 2018) – St. Joseph’s Health Hospital is the only hospital in Central New York to be named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics, Bariatrics, Obstetrics and Heart Care by the Women’s Choice Award®, America’s trusted referral source for the best in healthcare.

America’s Best Hospitals for Bariatric Surgery

St. Joseph’s Health is one of 422 hospitals that have met the highest standards for bariatric surgery across the country. This puts St. Joseph’s in the top 9% of 4,812 U.S. hospitals reviewed the America’s Best distinction. Hospitals in this category met the following criteria:

  • Accreditation by the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery joint-sponsored Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP)
  • At least 72% of patients reporting on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey that they would definitely recommend the hospital
  • A high patient safety ranking based on 11 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ measures of infection and complication rates

America’s Best Hospitals for Heart Care

St. Joseph’s Health is also in the top 9% of 4,812 U.S. hospitals offering heart care services. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of American women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year—approximately one woman every minute. What’s often thought of as a “man’s disease” strikes more women than men, and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined.

The methodology used to select St. Joseph’s Health as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Heart Care is unique in that it evaluates:

  • The number of cardiac/vascular services offered. Recognized hospitals must offer at least six of the following services: Cardiac Catheter Lab, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Cardiac Surgery, Carotid Stenting, Coronary Interventions, Electrophysiology, Vascular Interventions, Vascular Surgery and Coronary Intensive Care (CCU).·
  • 30-Day mortality and readmission rates for heart attack and failure
  • Patient recommendation ratings on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Survey
  • Primary research about women’s healthcare preferences

America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics Services

St. Joseph’s Health is one of 452 hospitals that have met the highest standards for obstetrics across the U.S. and is in the top 17% of 2,720 U.S. hospitals offering obstetrics. The America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics distinction is based on the following criteria:

  • The percentage of patients reporting through the HCAHPS survey that they would definitely recommend the hospital
  • Patient safety ranking based on 11 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ measures of infection and complication rates
  • Low rates of early elective deliveries (between 0-1%)
  • Baby-Friendly USA designation, a World Health Organization (WHO)/United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) initiative to support best practices for breast feeding education and counseling

America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics

St. Joseph’s Health is one of 357 hospitals that have met the highest standards for orthopedics care in the country, placing St. Joseph’s in the top 11% of 3,230 U.S. hospitals offering orthopedics services.

The methodology used to select America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics evaluates Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey results along with primary research about women’s health care preferences. Award recipients are also measured on their incidence of surgical complications and infections, including:

· A wound that splits open after surgery

· Accidental cuts and tears

· Deaths from serious treatable complications

· Rate of complications for knee or hip replacement patients

· Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI)

· Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureu (MRSA) infections

· Available services must include: arthroscopy, joint replacement and spine surgery orthopedic services available to patients, onsite physical therapy, and an MRI in order to qualify for the award.

This is the only award recognizing excellence in orthopedics based on robust criteria that consider patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.
